How To Mask A Domain With Go Daddy

Want to Mask a domain with Godaddy?

Not really sure what that means or how to do it?

This tutorial will quickly explain it and how to do it from within your Godaddy account.

Masking prevents visitors from seeing your domain forwarding by keeping your domain name in the Web browser’s address bar.

Let’s say for example you own 2 domains (xyz.com and abc.com). Your website is on abc.com, but you want to forward xyz.com to abc.com. So if anyone tries to goto xyz.com, that person will automatically be taken to abc.com.

The issue with doing this is that once the person who typed xyz.com is forwarded to abc.com, they can look in the address bar of the browser and see that it still says abc.com.  Maybe you want them to think they are still at xyz.com. Masking helps you shield that they are now at a new website.

Masking is great for people who are affiliates and promote other companies products or services.  Maybe you are fowarding your domain to your affiliate code.

For example:    johnskiosks.com is forwarding to –> http://www.kiosksRus.com/affiliatecode/0198228

Maybe you don’t want the people you have sent to your affiliate code know that they could have simply went to kiosksRus.com and bypassed you completely.

Masking makes it look like they are still on johnskiosks.com and they never left (shhh. even though they did). :)

Watch the video below about forwarding. The masking option is listed within the forwarding section.

How To Forward A Domain To Another Website At GoDaddy.com

Do you want to learn how to forward a domain to another website?

You can do this easily from within your admin section in your Go Daddy account.

Let me quickly explain what this process is for those who may be new to it. If you operate a website and you own other multiple domains, you are able to make it so that if anyone types in the other domains that it automatically loads your destination website. Some people only have a few domains forwarding to their main website, while others have 1000’s and 1000’s. This process is called “funneling traffic”.

I have included a video below to show you how it is done, but I will also write it too.

Follow these steps to forward a domain in your Godaddy account.

1. Login
2. On the left hand margin in the black area under the section “MY PRODUCTS”, click on “DOMAIN MANAGER”. Don’t click on “my domains”. It won’t take you to the right location.
3. Once in the domain manager, checkmark all the domains you want to forward.
4. Once you checkmark them, then all the small icons at the top will highlight.
5. Hold your mouse over the FORWARD icon and then select FORWARD A DOMAIN.
6. Type in the link to your main website (i.e. http://www.GDtutor.com), and select the option to update your DNS automatically.
7. Click OK (masking is another option and I will talk about that in the next post).

Now all you have to do is wait up to 24 hours for it to start working.

If after 24 hours it is still now working, give them a call and any of their Reps can assist you.

How To Renew A Domain Name At GoDaddy.com

Many people just let their domains auto renew, but did you know that having a domain only registered a year at a time may not be the best thing?

Most people who optimize their websites for the search engines, like to register or renew a domain for multiple years (5-10 years). The reason is because the search engines like to index sites that are planning on being around awhile. Not just a year. A domain name that is registered for multiple years would be considered a legitimate business and not someone just trying to be in business.

If you ever wanted to know how to renew a domain at Godaddy from within your admin area, watch the video below.
